World Environment Day 2025: Tackling Plastic Pollution Together

06.05.2025

Today, on June 5th, we join the global community in observing World Environment Day 2025, a pivotal moment to reflect on our environmental impact and renew our commitment to sustainable practices. This year’s theme, “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,” highlights the urgent need to address one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

Understanding World Environment Day

Established by the United Nations in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, World Environment Day has grown into the largest international platform for environmental awareness, celebrated annually on June 5th. Each year, a different country hosts the event, spotlighting specific environmental issues and mobilising global action.

The Plastic Pollution Crisis

Plastic pollution has infiltrated every corner of our planet, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains. Approximately 11 million tonnes of plastic waste enter aquatic ecosystems annually, threatening marine life and disrupting natural habitats. Microplastics have been found in soil, water, and even the food we consume, posing significant health risks.

The economic impact is equally staggering, with the annual cost of plastic pollution estimated between $300 billion and $600 billion*. Addressing this crisis requires a multifaceted approach, involving policy reforms, technological innovation, and a collective shift in consumer behaviour.

Reflex Group’s Commitment to Sustainability

At Reflex Group, we recognise our responsibility in combating plastic pollution and are dedicated to implementing sustainable practices across our operations:

  • Much of our flexible packaging is, or can be, recycled.
  • We offer materials with recycled content and are continually expanding our range of sustainable constructions.
  • We actively encourage greater investment in UK recycling capacity, increased kerbside recycling schemes and greater public awareness of packaging waste streams.

Collective Action for a Sustainable Future

The fight against plastic pollution is not one we can win alone. It demands collective action from governments, industries, communities, and individuals.

As the saying goes, “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” At Reflex, we embody this ethos, striving every day to make environmentally responsible decisions and encouraging others to do the same.
