Our Green Story
Our mission is “to become the world’s most sustainable packaging company” and that’s why we’re wiping the slate clean. By 2030 we’ll have captured the entire volume of carbon emitted from the day the company was founded in 2002.
How Do We Reduce Our Carbon Footprint?
For Reflex, offsetting carbon is not just the answer, but reducing carbon emissions in the first instance, as part of our wider sustainable goals.
So here’s how we do it, click the icons to find out:
Solar Panels
In May 2018 we began a program to install solar panels across our sites. We currently have them installed at our Boston, Mansfield, Newcastle and Leicester sites, collectively generating 688,000 kW/H annually, which is enough electricity to power 254 average sized UK households each year.
Wind Turbines
These have been installed at our Boston sit and generate 20,0000 kW/h annually.
LED Lighting
Our manufacturing sites all have LED lighting installed, which, on average, uses 75% less energy than conventional lighting.
Green Energy
All our UK electricity comes from renewable energy which equates to a saving of over 4,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Hybrid & Electric Car Fleet
We actively assess our car fleet, benchmarking against industry standards and our own internal targets. 76.20% of our car fleet is hybrid. 11.90% of our car fleet is electric. 11.90% of our car fleet is diesel. As of 27th April, the average emissions are 36.3 grams of CO2 per km.
State-of-the-Art Machinery
Investment in state-of-the-art machinery yields reductions in both energy and material use, with a lower carbon footprint and more efficient setup and changeover times.
Zero to Landfill
The majority of our waste avoids landfill and is used as a source of power. As it has a low moisture level and high calorific content, it is an excellent form of solid recovered fuel (srf). 4,000 tonnes of waste is diverted from landfill annually across the Reflex Group. This is the approx.weight of 317 London double-decker buses!
Recycling Centre
Based at our Boston site in Lincolnshire, we’ve set up a liner recycling facilitation centre that runs in conjunction with our raw material suppliers. We offer this brilliant service to our clients and the feedback on this to date has been very positive.
Tree Planting Scheme
Back in 2018 we began our ‘net zero’ journey by teaming up with Forest Carbon and planting just under 7,000 trees in Cumbria, to offset our Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions. Our latest project in Scotland includes over 43,000 trees, which is projected to capture the next 3-4 years’ worth of carbon emissions. We now also support UN-backed carbon offsetting schemes worldwide.
Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme
We monitor energy used by our buildings, manufacturing, and transport to identify energy savings measures. We report our carbon footprint via the requirements of the ‘Streamlined Energy Carbon Reporting’ scheme.
Conservation Work
In 2021 we became Business Members of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and are proudly helping to support the vitally important work they do across the country to protect wild bees.
Environmental Certification
We now have 7 sites certified to ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) and 5 sites Certified to FSC® and PEFC.
Reflex Woodlands Dashboard
